Rad Reading – January

This month I read From A Whisper To A Rallying Cry by Paula Yoo. It is a book about a boy finding out about his moms old fiancé and how he died. The man’s name was Vincent Chin, and he was killed by 2 men. They got a very easy off sentence and people were angry. The Asian community tried to get them a worse sentence. I can’t explain the rest without spoiling the story. I really liked the story being told in the book and all the characters are well thought out.

My favorite character was Jarod because he was very curious and shy like me. One of Jarod’s character traits is that he’s curious. One quote that proves this is, “How deeply intertwined was Vincent Chin with Jarod’s family. This shows he’s curious because he really wants to know why Vincent Chin was so close to his family. My favorite line from the book is, “Vincent moaned. As Choi gently cradled his friend in his arms, Vincent’s last words before slipping forever into unconsciousness were, ‘It’s not fair’”. This is my favorite quote because it shows how much Choi cared about Vincent and how sad he was. It was also my favorite quote because it has the last words Vincent would ever say and those words were very important.

The Person I Admire

Somebody I really admire Josh Jacobs. One reason I admire him is his talent. He is one of the best running backs in the NFL this year. He had an amazing year garnering 1600 yards rushing and 400 yards receiving. I’ve been wanting to be a running back in the NFL for many years now and have always aspired to be like him. Another reason I admire Josh Jacobs is because of his ability to get through tough times. Josh Jacobs had a rough upbringing because him his 5 siblings and his dad were all living in their car. Even while being homeless he was still able to be an amazing NFL running back. My final reason I admire Josh Jacobs is because he gives back to the community. He is able to do this because of his charity. With the money gained from the charity plus some of his own, he helps give people in need food and clothes.

My Word of Intention

My word of intention for 2023 is football. I chose this word because I want to play football in high school, college, and possibly go pro. One reason I chose this is because I need to keep good grades. I need to do this so I can play football in high school. Another reason I chose the word football is because I need to gain muscle. This is so when I do play high school football I won’t get hurt as much. My final reason I chose football is because I need to stay focused. I need to stay focused so I don’t get sidetracked and focus all my time on football.

Rad Reading – December

This month I decided to read The Lake by Natasha Preston. In The Lake two girls have decided to help chaperone a summer camp. When they arrive they help get everything set up. Then the campers arrived. Soon they start to see weird creepy messages on walls and ceilings. They then decide to sneak out of the camp with a few other chaperones. On their way back they spot someone taking pictures of them. They quickly run back to camp. The rest would spoil the story so I’ll stop there. I really enjoyed this book personally because of it’s excellent storytelling and amazing build up to the climax.

My favorite character in the story is the main character, Esme. She is my favorite character because she is kind of shy and less talkative then the others just like me. One character trait of Esme is that she is kind. One quote from the text that shows this is, “We’re going to have the best summer ever. Remember you can write your mom anytime you like.” This quote shows Esme is kind because she is helping a little kid get familiar with the camp. My favorite quote from the book is, “The truth can do damage, but a lie can do more.” I like this quote because it tells that covering up the truth with a lie can be worse than telling the truth.
